Ramanathaswamy Temple

The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the crown jewel of Rameswaram and one of the most revered Hindu temples in India. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (shrines of Lord Shiva) and part of the sacred Char Dham pilgrimage circuit alongside Badrinath, Puri, and Dwarka.

According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here to atone for slaying Ravana. The temple's legendary 1,200-pillared corridor (prakaram) is the longest in the world, with intricately carved granite pillars that showcase the brilliance of Dravidian architecture. The temple also houses 22 theerthams (sacred water tanks), each with its own mythological significance.

Dhanushkodi Beach & Ghost Town

Dhanushkodi is a hauntingly beautiful ghost town at the southernmost tip of Rameswaram island. Once a bustling trading town, it was devastated by the 1964 cyclone and remains abandoned to this day. The skeletal remains of a church, railway station, and post office stand as silent witnesses to history.

The beach here is a breathtaking sight — golden sands where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean in a stunning display of turquoise and blue waters. It's also the closest point to Adam's Bridge (Rama Setu), the chain of limestone shoals that, according to legend, was built by Lord Rama's army to reach Lanka.

Dhanushkodi is about 20 km from Rameswaram town. You can reach it by jeep or private vehicle. Mobile network connectivity can be patchy. Carry water and sun protection. The last 2 km is a sandy track — 4×4 vehicles recommended.

Adam's Bridge (Rama Setu)

Adam's Bridge, also known as Rama Setu (Rama's Bridge), is a chain of limestone shoals stretching between Rameswaram and Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. Geologists date the formation to over 7,000 years, while Hindu tradition holds it was built by Lord Rama's army of monkeys and bears.

The bridge is about 48 km long and was once walkable in ancient times. Today, most of it is submerged under shallow waters. The best view of Adam's Bridge can be seen from the Dhanushkodi viewpoint or from the air. The Indian government has declared it a National Heritage Site and it is protected under environmental laws.

According to the Ramayana, the bridge was constructed under the supervision of Nala and Nila, the divine architects, to help Lord Rama cross over to Lanka to rescue Sita from Ravana. It remains a powerful symbol of faith for millions of Hindus worldwide.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial

The Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial in Rameswaram pays tribute to India's 11th President, the beloved "People's President" and "Missile Man of India." Dr. Kalam was born and raised in Rameswaram, and his humble beginnings in this island town inspired millions worldwide.

The memorial is built at the site where his mortal remains were laid to rest. Pamban Bridge

The Pamban Bridge is India's first sea bridge and an engineering marvel that connects the mainland town of Mandapam to Rameswaram island. Opened in 1914, this 2.06 km long railway bridge is a stunning sight as trains glide across the turquoise waters of the Palk Strait.

The bridge features a unique double-leaf bascule section that can be raised to allow ships and boats to pass through. The road bridge running parallel to it offers spectacular views for drivers and bikers. Agni Theertham

Agni Theertham is the sacred seashore adjacent to the Ramanathaswamy Temple. It is believed that taking a holy dip here cleanses one of all sins, and it is an essential ritual for pilgrims visiting Rameswaram. The waters here are believed to have healing properties according to ancient scriptures.

The ritual bath is performed before entering the temple for darshan. The beach here is well-maintained with ghats and changing facilities. The morning hours see a beautiful golden sunrise that makes the experience truly spiritual. It is also the site where Lord Rama is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva after building the bridge to Lanka.
